Pregabalin Capsules: Clinical Uses, Mechanism of Action, Dosage & Safety Guidance
Pregabalin capsules are prescription medications used to manage neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, partial-onset seizures, and generalized anxiety disorder (in certain regions). Pregabalin is also marketed under the brand Lyrica and is classified as an anticonvulsant and neuropathic pain modulator.
Mechanism of Action
Pregabalin binds to the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system. This reduces the release of excitatory neurotransmitters such as glutamate and substance P, thereby decreasing abnormal nerve signaling associated with chronic pain and seizures.
Dosage & Administration
Dosing typically ranges from 75 mg to 600 mg daily, divided into two or three doses depending on the indication and renal function. Gradual titration is recommended to minimize side effects.
Safety & Precautions
Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, weight gain, and peripheral edema. Dose adjustment is required in patients with renal impairment. Abrupt discontinuation should be avoided to prevent withdrawal symptoms.
